Tom Morrissey: Success brings its own motivation to Limerick

Dan Morrissey might have spent Thursday celebrating the news of a third PwC GAA/GPA All-Star award in a Limerick team which claimed their fourth Liam MacCarthy on the bounce last summer, but he says that they aren't done yet.

The current crop are certainly the greatest team to ever emerge from Shannonside having already done five titles on the spin in Munster, joining Cork as the only county in the southern province to achieve the feat,

But they could do what no other county has ever done at senior inter-county level and claim a fifth All-Ireland title in a row next summer.

For Morrissey though, being in the position they're in now, rather than satisfying their hunger, instead provides them with the drive to go and collect more silverware.

"When you're winning it's easier to keep that hunger going," he said on RTÉ's Game On.

"If you were going out and you didn't think you were in the top three or four teams every year, it's a lot harder to motivate yourself then, to go back in December or January in the rain and cold, to do your pre-season.

"For us, whenever we do go back training in the next few weeks, it's a lot easier motivate yourself when you know you're in with good chances of winning medals and Munster and All-Ireland titles.

"In terms of motivation on the panel I don't think there's going to be a shortage for the year coming. You always have new lads coming into the panel to push you, so no one can't get complacent."

While 2024 could be historic for Limerick and for hurling, Morrissey adds that you can't look at it that way.

Instead, himself and his team mates will be doing their best to try to treat it like any other year.

"Every person you meet on the side of the street mentions the five in a row," he acknowledged.
