Tom McKibbin finishes with a flourish to qualify for US Open

Tom McKibbin will make his debut at the majors in next month's US Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina.

McKibbin finished the final qualifier at Walton Abbey with a flurry of birdies to move to eight under and a share of sixth place, alongside Matteo Manassero, Edoardo Molinari and Jason Scrivener.

The 21-year-old registered birdies on the third and the sixth holes on the New Course, but surrendered those gains with a double bogey on the ninth.

However, McKibbin responded to the setback brilliantly, with birdies on the 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 18th holes in a round of 67 to add to Sunday's 69 on the Old Course.

The Holywood man was agonisingly close to qualifying for last year's US Open in Los Angeles, coming up just one shot short at the same venue.

Grant Forrest, Richard Mansell and Brandon Robinson Thompson fared best in qualifying to share top spot on 10 under.

Sam Bairstow and Robert Rock were one shot behind the trio and also secured one of the nine qualifying berths.
