Tom Jones spills secret way The Voice stars 'called each other out' for controversial move

The Voice UK star Sir Tom Jones has revealed that the show's judges were "very dismissive" of a concept proposed by TV executives, and "shot a look" at each other if they ever followed the BBC guidelines.

According to Tom, before the series moved to ITV, the producers initially suggested scripting the singing competition, but this idea "bit the dust" soon after being introduced. Instead, they supplied the judges with a book of potential comments to use if they found themselves at a loss for words.

Tom shared that the show's bosses were worried about any potentially awkward moments. However, the judges weren't too keen on relying on the pre-written remarks.

In his autobiography, Over the Top and Back, Tom penned: "The idea of scripting the show might have bitten the dust very fast, but they still gave you a book with some suggestions for lines in it - things you might plausibly say at certain points in the show. It's live television after all: there's no value in anyone getting lost for words.

"But we were all very dismissive of the book - and ready to call each other out for using it. You caught someone using a line from the book, you shot them a look: 'I know where you got that line from'."

The 84 year old singer disclosed that bosses were eager to provide the coaches with ideas. This is something he says Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson initially had difficulty with.

Sir Tom says the producers were "coming at him with stuff" on his first day as a judge, having replaced The Script's Danny O'Donoghue. The Welshman says Ricky began feeling "overwhelmed" as the show newbie.
