To race or not? Simulator test to determine if Ricciardo makes F1 return at Qatar GP

AlphaTauri Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo faces a critical juncture in his quest to return for the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix, slated for 6-8 October at the iconic Lusail International Circuit.

Ricciardo endured a harrowing hand injury during a practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix in August, side-lining him from racing action. In his absence, young gun Liam Lawson stepped in and impressively secured points at the Singapore Grand Prix, filling Ricciardo's racing shoes.

Ricciardo decided to skip the physically demanding Singapore and Japanese Grands Prix to ensure a full recovery and target a return at the Qatar Grand Prix. His determination to rejoin the grid is undeniable.

However, a critical step awaits him: a simulator session scheduled for this week, which will serve as the litmus test for his readiness.

A pivotal moment

Speaking about this pivotal moment to Perth Now, Ricciardo revealed: "That's kind of my first test really to see where I'm at and simply make a call from there. I definitely want to be out [on-track] in ... call it the next few weeks; that's the plan. But probably early [this] week, I should know [if I can drive in Qatar]."

Team principal Christian Horner weighed in on Ricciardo's situation, emphasisng caution over haste, given the circumstances.

"I would say probably less likely than likely at the moment," Horner told Sky Sports F1 of Ricciardo's return in Qatar.

"His recuperation is going well, but he's fixed in the seat for next year.

"Does he need to rush a hasty return for Qatar or maybe another couple of weeks for Austin? It is a hell of a bumpy circuit anyway; it might be better to use that time in preparation
