TK Maxx worker reveals 'open secret' about store's clothes rails that customers 'wouldn't know'

TK Maxx enthusiasts have been let in on a clever design trick used by the famed discount retailer to enhance shopping experience, a detail some may have missed until now.

Channel 5's documentary 'TK Maxx: How To Bag A Bargain', revealed that the rails in TK Maxx are waxed - something former team leader and merchandiser Jodie Evans referred to as an "open secret".

The waxing process is aimed to eliminate the grating noises of squeaks and scratches when customers sift through the clothes, allowing for a more pleasant and smoother browsing.

This insight was just one of several disclosed in the documentary about the retailer's practices to improve customer shopping experience.

Discussing the hidden technique, Jodie Evans said: "Waxing the rails is a well-known secret within the teams at TK Maxx," reports the Mirror.

"It's something that customers wouldn't necessarily know about and what that allows you to do is basically glide the products through the rails quite easily without that horrible squeaking scratching sound that you often hear in many retailers."

To maximise customer engagement, Daniel Baker, a former senior merchandiser, explained another strategy used by TK maxx to make people feel each purchase is urgent: "We wanted to have only one of everything in the racks because it meant that when they [the customer] were adamant they had to buy it there and then."

Jodie revealed: "It's something that's called hashing. We used to hash the product through the rails. So, if you've got three size smalls, we might put one at the start of the smalls, one in the middle and one at the end."
