Tips to stay cool in daytime during the heatwave

For the first time-ever since recordings began, forecasters are predicting temperatures of potentially reaching 40C in some parts of the UK.

Because of this, the Met Office has seen fit to issue a red warning for extreme heat for most of England and Wales which will be in place on Monday, July 18 and Tuesday, July 19. An amber heat warning has also been extended for most of England in Wales which will be in place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (July 17 to July 19).

Due to the extreme heat, the public are being urged to do as much as they can to stay safe. High temperatures like this can lead to severe illness and even risk of life for a lot of the population.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “Heat-health alerts have now been issued to the majority of the country, with temperatures set to remain consistently high throughout the duration of the weekend and the start of next week.

“It is important to keep yourself hydrated and to find shade where possible when UV rays are strongest, between 11am and 3pm.

“If you have vulnerable family, friends and neighbours, make sure they are aware of how they can keep themselves protected from the warm weather.’’
