Tinkler warns City not to underestimate struggling Stellenbosch ahead of Cape Derby

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has issued a stern warning to his players to not underestimate an underperforming Stellenbosch FC side ahead of the Cape derby on Friday evening.

City has gained momentum in recent weeks with two wins in their last three matches, with Tinkler hoping that his side can continue to build on their performances.

Stellenbosch currently find themselves 15th on the DStv Premiership table and without a win in their last five outings. However, Tinkler feels that form goes out the window in derby games.

"Obviously, Stellenbosch is going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment struggling to get positive results," Tinkler told reporters ahead of the match.

"But I don't think that means anything because it's the derby. And obviously, I think they they'll come out fighting.

"We've seen it because we play with them a lot, especially friendly matches, and they know us quite well. So, we definitely cannot underestimate them.

"We're going to have to ensure that we go there and play with a lot of positivity, a lot of aggression, while winning our duels. We cannot allow them to bully us, and then we need to look to play our football ultimately.

"It's important to worry about ourselves."

Tinkler also believes that his team's confidence and morale is high due to recent performances and results.

"Our last three results were very, very positive. Now, we need to build on that," he said.

"But, as I said before, do not underestimate the Stellenbosch team, especially when it comes to the Cape derby.

"I believe there's going to be a lot of people there. And I think that's great.
