Tina Thompson fired after four seasons as women's basketball coach
Virginia has fired women's basketball coach Tina Thompson after the Cavaliers wrapped up a 5-22 season Wednesday with a first-round loss in the ACC tournament.
«Unfortunately, we have not experienced the kind of success this program has come to expect and deserve,» Virginia athletic director Carla Williams said in a statement announcing Thompson's dismissal. «I am thankful for Coach Thompson's efforts and I wish her the very best.»
Thompson, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer as a player, was 30-63 in four seasons as Virginia coach, including a 15-37 record in ACC play. She had one year remaining on her contract.
Virginia's season ended with a 61-53 loss to Wake Forest in the ACC tournament.
