Timo Werner has admitted for the first time that he is assessing his position at Chelsea with the World Cup in mind.
The Germany forward is keen to represent his country in Qatar later this year and could follow Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech in leaving on loan in search of regular first team football as a starter. Lukaku has gone back to Inter Milan temporarily while Ziyech is on course to join rivals AC Milan.
Werner scored Chelsea’s opening goal of their pre-season tour on Saturday night against Club America. But he is likely to find himself an understudy to new £47.5million signing Raheem Sterling on the left of the Chelsea attack this season.
Werner has yet to speak to boss Thomas Tuchel but he has been left with a decision to make. “First of all, the most important thing is that I am happy,” said the striker. “I am happy when I play and score goals. That’s the fact. I could be happy everywhere.
