Timo Werner explains why playing for Germany suits him better than Chelsea

Timo Werner appears to have laid the blame for his poor Chelsea form on the tactical structure while claiming he feels "more comfortable" playing for Germany due to "differences in the style of play".

The former RB Leipzig forward has failed to live up to the lofty expectations placed on him upon his arrival in the summer of 2020 in a deal that cost the Blues £53million. While he is often a handful for opposition defenders with his intelligent movement and well-timed runs, Werner simply has not pulled his weight in terms of goal-scoring.

It is not always the case, though. Werner can often be found netting for Germany and was among the goals again during Die Mannschaft's 2-0 friendly victory over Israel, ensuring the 2014 World Cup winners have won eight from eight outings under former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick.

In the wake of the win, Werner told reporters: "I'm a striker and always want to score. Things aren't going the way I'd like at Chelsea, so it's all the better that things are going well here under Hansi Flick. I really enjoy playing football, no matter where I'm playing. There are differences in the style of play between football at Chelsea and here.

"Maybe the one at the national team suits me better. Here, I always have scoring chances, I can score goals. I feel very comfortable here." Werner's club form has left plenty to be desired in West London, with just one Premier League goal to his name so far this term in 14 outings.

Across all competitions his stats don't exactly make for much better reading, with his entire tally coming in at seven goals in 28 games. This return marks an incredible fall from grace from Werner's final season in the Bundesliga that saw him net 34 goals in 45 games.
