Time up for Matty Longstaff after latest snub

Matty Longstaff already had an uncertain future at Newcastle United this summer after falling down the pecking order last season and being loaned out to a League Two side, but it appears the 22-year-old will be on his way out of St James’ Park at the earliest opportunity.

Longstaff was playing in the Premier League only last year, but Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live says Eddie Howe is planning to move him on. He’s been told to train with the reserves until a suitor takes him off Newcastle’s hands, so Longstaff has played his final competitive game for the Magpies.

Longstaff has endured a monumental decline, having been valued by Newcastle at £50m in 2019 to being valued at only £1.6m this summer, so a move away would suit all parties. Brother Sean Longstaff recently signed a new deal at Newcastle and has a future under Eddie Howe, but the Football League likely beckons for Matt.

He’s made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, scoring three goals. But the heady days of top-flight football have gone and Longstaff is now turning out for Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen (2021) and League Two outfit Mansfield Town (2022).
