“Time to take the step up” – Norwich City set to swoop for 22-year-old: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict‘ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Norwich City are interested in a move for Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Michael Cooper this summer, according to Football Insider.

Angus Gunn and Tim Krul are tied down on long term contracts at Carrow Road, and therefore one may have to depart to make room for Cooper in the first team squad.

The Canaries have been very good at re-assessing their squad after suffering relegation from the Premier League, and bringing in Cooper this summer would represent smart business.

We gathered the thoughts of a selection of FLW writers to see if they believe Cooper would be a smart addition for the Canaries…

Michael Cooper has had a brilliant season with Plymouth Argyle having kept 18 clean sheets in 46 appearances so it’s no wonder he is wanted now.

At only 22-years-old, Cooper has a fantastic future ahead of him with plenty of time to grow too and a move to the Championship now would be good for him.

The goalkeeper has now had two seasons of regular League One football and we’ve seen a significant improvement just in those seasons as he upped his tally from ten clean sheets last season to 18.

Plymouth came close to the play-offs this season and if they had made it, he could’ve been playing Championship football next season anyway so now definitely seems like the right time to take the step up.

Furthermore, his progression over the last two seasons alone suggest that if he’s in a higher standard of team then his own performances too will increase with that making it a signing worth doing for Norwich.
