Former U-17 World Cup winner dies on spot

Former Super Eagles Midfielder, Tijanni Babangida and members of his family were, yesterday, involved in a ghastly motor accident along the Kaduna-Zaria Road.

According to the secretary general of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), Emmanuel Babayaro, Tijanni’s younger brother, Ibrahim, who played for the national U-17 team (Golden Eaglets), died on the spot, while Tijani and his family were taken to a nearby hospital.

The late Ibrahim Babangida was in the Golden Eaglets team that won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan alongside Kanu Nwankwo, Wilson Oruma, Karibe Ojigwe and Peter Anosike.

Before moving to Volendam in the Dutch league, Ibrahim played for Bank of the North, Stationery Stores of Lagos and Katsina United.
