10th Okpekpe Road Race unveils unique medals ahead of event

Participants at the upcoming Okpekpe race will get commemorative medals.

The medals for the 10th edition of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have been unveiled, just five days before the competition takes place in Okpekpe town, Edo State.

Pamodzi Sports Marketing, the event’s organizers, highlighted that the design of the medals emphasizes uniqueness and originality, befitting the race’s status as the first in Nigeria to have its course measured by a World Athletics certified course measurer and the first in West Africa to receive label status.

Race director Zack Amodu explained the rationale behind the unveiling of these commemorative medals.

“This is a celebration of organizing a world-class race for 10 years without controversies, consistently receiving commendations from World Athletics. Our race has evolved from a bronze label in 2015 to silver in 2018 and gold in 2023, following a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19,” said Amodu.

He added: “We are proud to set the pace for others to follow in Nigeria and the entire West African region. The commemorative medal is unique to this race, featuring the race logo with the green color of Nigeria and designed around the number 10, symbolizing a decade of this historic event.”

Amodu stressed the importance of the medals connecting sports, heroism, and national identity. Each medal is crafted from a unique brass alloy and plated in gold, silver, or bronze. They will be awarded to those who finish within a specified time, as well as to celebrities attending the race.

“We are ready to deliver another spectacular event on Saturday in Okpekpe, befitting our status as the first gold label 10km road race in Nigeria,” he assured.
