Throwback: Chelsea legend Hazard mocks Sterling’s running style

It’s a good job that Eden Hazard isn’t still at Chelsea as there might’ve been some awkward conversations with their new signing Raheem Sterling.

Hazard is among the most popular and successful Chelsea players of the Premier League era. The Belgian international spent his prime years at the club, winning two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues, the League Cup and FA Cup during his seven seasons there.

He scored 110 goals in 352 appearances for the Blues, who appeared to have cashed in on him at the right time – he’s failed to reproduce anything like that kind of form since moving to Real Madrid.

Sterling has a comparable record to Hazard’s at Chelsea, having scored 131 goals in 339 appearances for Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup during his seven years at the Etihad. He’ll be hoping to be just as successful after moving to Chelsea.

Since the transfer was announced, footage has inevitably done the rounds on social media of the time Hazard mocked Sterling’s distinctive running style.

Hazard was obviously sharing a joke with his team-mates and evidently has no disrespect for Sterling. He was also one of the first Chelsea players to speak up and offer his support and solidarity following the disgraceful racist abuse that Sterling faced at Stamford Bridge in 2018.

“The only thing I can say is I support the player. Sterling is a fantastic player,” Hazard told Sky Sports News.

“There is an investigation, so we don’t know what will happen. Proper Chelsea fans just sing for Chelsea and enjoy the game.

“I am fully supportive of Raheem and this sort of racism cannot be in the stadium anymore.”
