Thriving in Africa! PSL strugglers Marumo Galants advance to CAF Confederation Cup quarters

DStv Premiership strugglers Marumo Gallants were humbled 4-1 by Al-Akhdar in their CAF Confederation Cup Group A clash at the Martyrs of February Stadium on Sunday.

Despite the defeat, Gallants, anchored at the bottom South African top-flight, secured a passage to the Confederation Cup quarter-finals with the final matchday yet to be played after the FIFA international break.

Contrary to their league form and position, Gallants are first in their group with nine points from five matches, winning three and tasting two losses.

Second place is USM Alger (eight points), with Saint Eloi Lupopo (five) and Al Akhdar (five) are third and fourth, respectively.

Allan Kateregga earned Alger a point on Sunday against Lupopo that ensured Gallants are guaranteed to be seeded in the CAF's second-tier club cup competition quarter-final draw next month.

Gallants will welcome Lupopo to South Africa for the group stage's final matchday on Sunday, 2 April, before the draw occurs a few days later.

Meanwhile, back home, Gallants have seven matches to hold onto their top-flight status.

The Limpopo outfit will not have it easy as they have matches against Royal AM (H), Kaizer Chiefs (A), Chippa United (H), SuperSport United (H), Maritzburg United (A), Mamelodi Sundowns (H) and Swallows (A).
