‘Threw me’ — Rio Ferdinand confused by aspect of Raheem Sterling’s Man City exit

Rio Ferdinand says he cannot understand why more fuss wasn’t made about Raheem Sterling’s departure from Manchester City.

The 27-year-old left the Etihad for Chelsea this summer after racking up 109 goals and 77 assists in seven years for. Overall, he lifted four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and five League Cups for City.

But after experiencing a reduction in his playing time over the past couple of seasons, Sterling wanted more guarantees of regular action so made an exit to Stamford Bridge. He will undoubtedly go down as a legend at City, and many were sad to see him go.

However, Ferdinand believes there wasn’t the heightened reaction he expected from both City fans and Chelsea supporters upon his move. Speaking to FootballJOE, he said: “The thing with the Sterling transfer was that he’s been so successful there, personally and in the team, there wasn’t a big ‘we’re letting Sterling go!’ and there wasn’t a ‘we’ve got him!’.

“It just didn't marry out to me for what I think he is. I think he’s top. Both fan bases were like ‘yeah cool it’s happened’. That threw me a little bit.”
