Three winners and three losers from Manchester United pre-season tour of the US so far

Manchester United have one leg of their USA pre-season tour to go with Borussia Dortmund up next.

Erik ten Hag's senior side suffered defeat for the first time in their warm-up matches against Real Madrid. It was a step up in class against the La Liga giants and showed the work that's left to be done.

Some of that is, of course, in the transfer market. United are confident of having Rasmus Hojlund for their Premier League opener against Wolves in just under three weeks.

Marcus Rashford was a willing but ineffective runner up top against Madrid, whilst Jadon Sancho has been used as a makeshift forward in other games. The need for a striker is obvious.

Elsewhere in the squad, there have been plenty of winners and losers from the pre-season outings so far. MEN Sport looks at who those are.

Kobbie Mainoo

Undoubtedly the biggest breakthrough star of pre-season has been Mainoo. He will be gutted to have missed a further chance to impress against Real Madrid after being forced off after three minutes due to injury.

The fact he was starting against Real rather than Wrexham highlights his remarkable rise. United have opted against sending him on loan and plan to further embed him in the first team.

Mainoo's United teammates have been impressed. He has shown maturity in and out of possession beyond his years against senior opposition.

Now, the challenge is to keep pushing. He could find himself earning more first-team minutes based on his pre-season showings.
