Three Manchester United players face uncertainty about their roles in Ruben Amorim's starting XI

Despite the size of Manchester United's squad being trimmed in the January transfer window, it is still not a straightforward task to name their strongest XI.

In addition to letting a plethora of youngsters head out on loan last month, United also allowed Tyrell Malacia, Marcus Rashford and Antony to leave on temporary deals for the remainder of the season.

As a result of Rashford and Antony moving to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively, United are now thin on numbers in attack. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are their only centre-forward options and Alejandro Garnacho and Amad are their only wide options.

Amid Amorim's rotation policy and United's lack of consistency in results and performances, there has been no such thing as a settled XI since the former Sporting Lisbon boss arrived at the club in November. Injury issues have also not helped.

But despite the size of United's squad being reduced, particularly in the attacking department, Amorim is no closer to a settled front-three. He is regularly tinkering and that is reflected in naming six different attacking combinations in the last six games.

The only real theme of continuity during that period has seen Amad start as the right-sided No.10 in four of those six matches. In the left-sided No.10 berth, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho have all started at some point over the last six games, with Garnacho starting in that role in three of the last five. Fernandes last started in the 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on January 19.
