Threave Rovers caretaker boss takes "full responsibility" for cup defeat

Threave Rovers caretaker manager Paul McGinley has taken “full responsibility” for their Utility Hut South of Scotland Challenge Cup exit.

The Castle Douglas side were knocked out by Stranraer thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Ryan Edgar on the artificial surface at Stranraer Academy.

McGinley said: “We’ve set up to play a certain way, I take full responsibility for what happens when things go wrong.

“We train on grass, we play on grass, we’re very direct and aggressive with how we use the ball.

“Astroturf doesn’t suit us and I should have changed it, I should have looked into it more, but if I’m being totally honest I’d rather fully focus on our one aim. If everyone reflected on it properly, they’d know the main objective is to gain promotion – whether or not we can achieve it we don’t know.

“If they looked themselves in the mirror and were honest on Saturday night, they’d have thought they probably could have done more to win it. I’ll take full responsibility, the buck stops with me. I’ve no qualms with the effort of my players, I’ve got qualms with how I prepped them.

“I hope Stranraer do well and Allan Jenkins, their manager, is a top bloke.”

Threave took the lead when Dylan Cairnie converted a first half cross from Alex Henderson. However, Stranraer equalised through Ryan Edgar a quarter of an hour from the end before the same player popped up with the winner.

McGinley added: “If you want to be analytical you could say we missed too many chances, we gave away two sloppy goals through mistakes and we didn’t capitalise on our domination in the first half.

“Any team can beat any team on the day. The game’s about goals, you concede, you score. You always try to score more than the opposition.
