Threave Rovers aim to open up nine point gap over Glenvale

Threave Rovers are aiming to open up a nine point gap over one of their title rivals this weekend.

The Castle Douglas side face Glenvale, who won the West of Scotland League fourth division last season.

However, Vale have struggled in their opening games and have just four points from their first five fixtures.

Threave gaffer Danny Dunglinson, said: “They came up and were tipped as favourites to go and win the league but had a pretty poor start. If we could get a win it would be nine points of a difference.

“They were considered one of the favourites so it would be massive, even at this stage. It’s a lot for them to claw back over the rest of the season.

“If we can get a win it maybe takes them out of a title race really early on, which would be handy.”

Threave are still unbeaten in the league and beat Kilsyth Athletic 4-1 on Saturday.

They led at the break thanks to a goal from Lewis Downie, however, a spectacular lob from Matthew McFarlane drew the visitors level after an hour.

But Ross Irving soon put Threave back in front, his second putting daylight between the sides 10 minutes from time. And the striker scored again in the final few minutes to complete his hat-trick. Dunglinson said: “He’s now got eight in four games. Numbers wise it’s incredible.

“Lewis Downie scored again, Aiden Kerr didn’t score but he won a penalty and had chances, so his all round performance was really good.

“Strikers are chipping in with goals and assists.

“It’s the best we’ve played, but we struggled to get the first goal, missed a penalty and missed some chances.
