Thousands displaced as flooding washes away home in Romanian county of Galati

Thousands of homes were washed away by flooding in the Romanian county of Galati – leaving thousands displaced. 

Romanian towns, roads and bridges have been devastated by the recent extreme weather and accompanying loss of life. 

While the water has receded, houses full of mud have been left behind. Homes, goods and furniture were destroyed. 

In Italy, Saturday morning marked the beginning of the clean-up in Emilia-Romagna. Volunteers came to help those heavily affected by the weather. 

The small town of Romagna was hit by flooding – leaving significant damage. 

The extent of the damage is still being evaluated, but on Friday Italian Premiere Giorgia Meloni’s government approved an initial allocation of 20 million euros in aid. 

Flooding was expected to peak in Hungary on Saturday as the Danube River reached peak level. 

At 642cm, the water threatened to burst the banks. 

In preparation for a new wave of flooding, key infrastructure points such as metro entrances were fortified with sandbags.
