Thomas Tuchel in England talks amid Lee Carsley uncertainty

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is reportedly in current talks with the English FA over the national team's manager vacancy, amid uncertainly over Lee Carsley's recent comments about the role.

Tuchel, 51, led the Blues to Champions League glory in 2021 but was sacked the following year.

He has been among the bookmakers' favourites for the England job since Gareth Southgate stood down after Euro 2024.

After defeat to Greece last week, interim manager Carsley said that he will "hopefully" be returning to his Under-21 job, once his remit taking the senior side's Nations League campaign is complete in November.

Following a win over Finland three days later, the former Republic of Ireland midfielder clarified these comments by telling ITV: "My bosses have made it totally clear what they need from me.

"This job deserves a world-class coach that has won trophies and been there and done it – and I'm still on the path to doing that.

"I've not really thought that much about it. I keep saying the same thing – my remit was to do six games and I’m really happy with that."

The Sky Sports News report on England's Tuchel talks follows a Times report on Monday, which said Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had been sounded out about the role.

Tuchel is without a club, having left Bayern Munich at the end of last season. Tuchel’s team missed out on the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen.

The Football Association declined to comment on the reports.
