The man set to become the new King of Ibrox is American business tycoon Andrew Cavenagh.
The Daily Record can today reveal Cavenagh’s identity as a key figure behind the US-led takeover of Rangers in a multi-million pound deal which is being backed by the financial might of the San Francisco 49ers. We understand Cavenagh has taken on a senior role in the consortium which also includes 49ers big hitter Paraag Marathe.
Our pictures confirm that both men were in the directors’ box at Old Trafford as VIP guests of the Rangers board when Philippe Clement’s side went down to a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United in a Europa League Battle of Britain tie on January 23. And we can also reveal Cavenagh made a solo trip to Glasgow two weeks earlier to hold face-to-face negotiations on the fine details of the deal which would see him take control of the club.
Cavenagh – who has amassed a personal fortune building his Philadelphia based health insurance firm ParetoHealth – was also given the red carpet treatment in the directors’ box at Ibrox on January 12 for a 3-1 top flight win over St Johnstone. That was the same day a hardcore section of the club’s supporters staged a mass walk out to demonstrate against the current embattled regime and call for a change of ownership.
What the protestors did not realise was that the man who intends to pump millions into transforming the fortunes of their club was actually sitting inside the same stadium. It’s unclear how long Cavenagh spent in the city before returning to the States after the St Johnstone match.
