'This is not anti-student - this is unsustainable'

Students have sparked outrage in recent weeks after leaving piles of rubbish in areas across UK cities as they head home for the summer holidays.

Photos show mounds of waste and overflowing bins in south Manchester with sofas , laptops and even bongs among the waste dumped into alleyways.

The weekend closest to July 1 has become notorious for fly-tipping as it marks the point when most shared student house leases expire.

And as they often only spend a year living in their properties, the occupants tend to ditch unwanted items before leaving.

Now, Fallowfield residents have spoken about the impact the behaviour is having on the area's permanent population.

Kattie Kincaid, who represents the South East Fallowfield Residents Group, described the problem of transient residents passing through Fallowfield, rather than living there long-term and having pride and a stake in the area was 'overwhelming'.

"I would just say that we need our neighbourhood to be more balanced like it was in the past," she said. "In particular, we need more permanent residents because they are generally the ones who care and look after the area more.

"This area has so much to offer and some very special people but the problem of transience is overwhelming. MCC (Manchester City Council) talk of creating ‘balanced neighbourhoods’ and yet, unbelievably, they allowed the university to expand their Owens’ Park site by 40 per cent on current numbers.

"The increase will mainly be for first years who then move into former family houses in their 2nd and possibly 3rd years. I think this is grossly irresponsible. This imbalance is no good for anyone. What is the plan?
