"This is awful": Tributes paid to woman killed on East Lancs Road as police issue arrest update

A man who was arrested after a woman was killed on a major road near Wigan has been released on bail, police have confirmed.

The woman - aged in her 30s - died of her injuries after being struck by a Vauxhall Insignia on the East Lancashire Road at around 12.50am yesterday morning (Monday). She was a pedestrian, police said.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was taken into custody for questioning.

In an update issued this morning (Tuesday), a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said he had since been released on bail while investigations continue.

Police said the car had been travelling towards Liverpool along the A580 when it collided with the woman. A stretch of the road between Lowton and Golborne was taped off for several hours as investigations were carried out by GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

Following the woman's tragic death, readers of the Manchester Evening News paid tribute on Facebook. June wrote: "Rest in peace young lady. Sincere sympathies to family and friends x x".

Kami said: "I live by right by this and it is awful. I feel for the family."

Dave commented: "So sad, no age." Leanne added: "So sad, RIP."

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses of the incident to come forward. They also want to speak to anyone who has dash cam footage.
