Thierry Henry Once Annoyed Pep Guardiola So Much, He Was Substituted After Scoring A Goal

The France international was shifted to the left wing under Guardiola, an unfamiliar position after spending his prime years as a striker with Arsenal.

One incident in the Champions League against Sporting Lisbon saw Henry hauled off after swapping wings and getting himself on the scoresheet. Check out the goal in question from 6:32.

"He had a plan. If you don’t actually do what he’s asking you to do, you’re going to be in trouble," Henry told Sky Sports back in 2015.

"Me being me I went there [to the right wing] to play with Leo [Messi] and I could hear Guardiola being upset because I wasn’t on the side of the dugout. I didn’t really care, you know.

"I scored a goal, 1-0 up against Sporting Lisbon at half-time, all nice and everything, and he took me off. I was like ‘what did I do wrong?’

"When Pep had a plan - respect his plan.

"He used to say to us the first time he took the team, 'my job is to take you up to the last third, your job is to finish it'."

Henry was taken off for Bojan Krkic and was forced to watch from the sidelines as Barcelona ran out 5-2 winners.

Guardiola's methods worked, but a number of elite forwards came and went at the Camp Nou during his four years as manager.

Henry left for MLS side New York Red Bulls in 2010 and Samuel Eto'o lasted just a year before being swapped for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Sweden international would only be a Blaugrana player for a season after being pushed aside for Lionel Messi.

He'd join AC Milan on loan in 2010 and then seal a permanent move back to Italy in 2011.

Since then, Guardiola has moulded all of his strikers to fit his system perfectly.

While at Manchester City, Sergio Aguero developed his all-round game and remained a goal threat until his retirement last year.
