They pulled him over for a routine stop, it descended into mayhem

A banned driver led cops on an "extraordinarily long" chase which a judge branded "one of the worst instances of dangerous driving" they have ever seen.

Elliot Seddon drove at speeds of up to 75mph in a residential area with a 30mph limit after zooming away from officers who had tried to pull him over. The 28-year-old then rammed their patrol car at the end of the pursuit which last more than 10 minutes and spanned an area of more than four miles.

He has now been jailed by the judge said who said he "could have caused catastrophic injury."

Seddon had been banned from driving for 18 months in January 2021 for driving over the drug drive limit in April 2020. But he was driving a grey Ford Focus when a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) patrol car conducted a "routine stop" on the vehicle on Lily Lane near Platt Bridge, Wigan in the early hours of July 11, 2021.

The Focus "initially pulled over" ad the police car pulled alongside the vehicle in which the court was told there were either two or three passengers. Officers spoke to Seddon, who was "looking straight at them", and told him to take the key out of the ignition but he "drove off at speed."

Officers activated their sirens and started pursuing Seddon, who was heading in the direction of Ashton-in-Makerfield. The court heard his speed at times reached 75mph in a 30mph zone as he passed through Ashton town centre and towards the border with Merseyside.
