"They are talking" - Keith Downie hints Newcastle could reach internal agreement with 24 y/o

Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff is more likely to sign a new contract than leave on a free this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The £11.7m-rated midfielder has been offered a long-term deal at his boyhood club, but the 24-year-old is yet to decide on his future.

Having established himself as a regular in the heart of the Toon Army’s midfield, The Times believe that Newcastle have put a four-year offer on the table to prevent Longstaff leaving the club.

Longstaff made 26 appearances in all competitions and played 90 minutes in each of the Magpies’ last three games of the campaign.

However, the ex-Blackpool loanee is yet to commit his future to the St James’ Park outfit, with his place in the starting XI far from nailed on ahead of next season.

But the report says that Longstaff has been told by Eddie Howe that he remains an ‘important’ part of the club moving forward, despite the Newcastle boss leaving him on the bench more than 10 times this season.

Therefore, Downie reckons there’s more chance he stays on Tyneside than seeks pastures new when his contract in the north East expires next month.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Would he want to be a regular starter in the Championship, or would he want to fight for his place at Newcastle? I think I sort of know where the answer would be there.

“It’s an interesting one, Longstaff. The offer is there, they’re talking about it. It will be interesting to see which way it goes, but if I had to plump for one or the other, I think he will probably sign.”
