The youth of Manchester find their voice and the world is listening
These teenagers have plenty to say: and when they speak, we sit up and listen. In fact, their opinions, humour, hopes, concerns, music - and much more - are resonating with audiences in Manchester, the North West, and even globally.
They are amongst the youngest stars at ALL FM 96.9, a community radio station based in Levenshulme. Air time that’s made possible through the training and support of ALL FM’s Radio Club and its funding through the Co-op’s Local Community Fund (which also supports sustainability local causes).
As a business that stands for something different, Co-op focuses on bringing people together to help create happy, healthy communities for everyone.
And as part of Co-op Fortnight this year - an annual celebration of the power and success of co-operatives across the UK between Monday, June 19 to Sunday, July 2, 2023 - they're telling inspiring stories that show how co-ops are making a difference to people, to communities and the wider economy.
Local gamechangers supported by the Co-op - like Jane Goetzee - are an integral part of this drive and commitment. According to Jane, who trains the young, aspiring presenters at ALL FM 96.9's Radio Club, the backing of the Co-op brand has been vital.
“We want everyone to have the chance to use the radio station as a platform,” she explained. “The funding from the Co-op meant we could initiate a particular radio club for teenagers. I think the young people would say that it’s made a change for them.
“Every week, they have a place to go where something different is asked of them. They are asked to behave like young professionals but also given the freedom to exercise their right to expression - it’s a really good balance - and to me that’s game-changing.”
