'The worst' - Troy Deeney says just what Blues fans are thinking in wake of Blackpool humiliation
Troy Deeney admits Birmingham City’s 6-1 thumping at the hands of Blackpool is an all time low in his professional career.
The passionate Blues skipper was the first player to go to the travelling army of fans after the final whistle at Bloomfield Road on Easter Monday when he fronted up to the supporters and apologised for the collective performance.
Lee Bowyer’s men had a wretched Easter weekend, having first given up a two goal lead against Midland rivals Coventry City at St Andrew’s on Good Friday and ending up as 4-2 losers.
A chance to put that right at Blackpool on Bank Holiday Monday, however, failed to go to plan as Blues shipped three goals before the break, with the rampant Tangerines adding three more in the second half.
Deeney took to social media today to issue a heartfelt message to the fans after sleeping on the performance and result.
“Took time to think and process what happened yesterday, the worst feeling I’ve had as a professional,” he said in a message posted on his instagram page.
“We as a team know the standards that are expected from us and we fell so so short of those. Sorry to all the travelling supports and everybody associated with the club you deserved better from us @bcfc.”
Monday’s game marked Deeney’s first start for the Blues since their 1-0 defeat by Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup back in January after suffering a thigh injury that sidelined him for more than four months.
He played 74 minutes before making way for Scott Hogan with the scoreline already at 3-0 when he made his exit. In that time, he recorded 16 touches of the ball and had a pass accuracy of 40%, making it an afternoon for both player and team to forget.
