The World This Week: NATO summit and Ukraine, Modi in Paris for Bastille day
The NATO summit this week was almost a one-man show starring someone whose country is not yet a member: Volodymyr Zelensky. He, of course, was hoping to win over the Alliance to give him a time frame for Ukraine's membership. He did not get that. But Zelensky did secure more weapons and a lot of goodwill from the de factor leader of NATO.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was guest of honour at the Bastille Day parade in Paris. It is perhaps the biggest honour France can give to a visiting leader. Modi looked on with pride as Indian soldiers joined the annual military parade. Behind the scenes, big business deals were signed. India has signed up for Rafale fighter jets and submarines. It's a multi-billion-euro payday for France, and a further sign of what analysts like to call "a growing strategic relationship." Is it win-win?
