'The word that's coming out of the club' - Gold claims Spurs set to keep 'underrated' star

podcast

Spurs secured the signing of Yves Bissouma last week, with the transfer raising concerns over the future of first-team regular Hojbjerg, as rumours started to circulate to say that he could be on his way this summer.

However, Gold quickly shot these down, taking to Twitter to confirm that Spurs have no plan to sell the robust Danish enforcer.

Discussing the 26-year-old, the reliable journalist has reinforced that view and insists Hojbjerg offers Antonio Conte something no other player can and sticks to his duties diligently.

He said: “I think he’s the kind of guy you need in your squad. I would not be looking to put him anywhere near that exit door, and I think that’s the word that’s coming out of the club.

“I think he’s very underrated, Hojbjerg, for what he does. There’s this kind of maybe a desire that every single player that plays needs to be the perfect all-round player who can do everything, and well, that’s not really how football works.

“You have people for specific roles, and the roles that he carries out for Spurs, he’s excellent at.”

According to WhoScored, only Harry Kane and Son Heung-min outperformed the 58-cap Denmark international last season across a similar volume of games.

Compared to Bissouma, Hojbjerg averaged more key passes per 90 minutes and boasted a higher pass completion rate last term in the Premier League, but with the incoming Malian’s defensive numbers (WhoScored) surpassing that of the Dane, perhaps his position in the first XI isn’t assured. However, it does make for healthy competition in that Spurs engine room and we see no need for him to be looking elsewhere.
