'The women's refuge we lived in burnt down... I have no idea what's next for us'

A mum who has fled domestic violence has spoken of her desperation to find a home for her family after being forced to leave a women’s refuge following a fire.

The mum-of-two, who cannot be named for safeguarding reasons, claims she and her two young children have been moved from hotel to hotel by Oldham Council after being evacuated with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

She says her family, who had been living in the refuge for nine months, have now been reunited with their possessions but are living in a constant state of uncertainty. She claims they have been moved to three different hotels in under a month.

Oldham Council has said it is continuing to support the residents who were evacuated following the fire and said families are being housed in hotels as a temporary measure whilst essential repairs are carried out.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed they attended the fire.

Following the blaze the woman and her children, aged five and six, were moved into a hotel but had to leave their belongings behind. The woman said her family were allocated breakfast and an evening meal at the hotel.

Just days later on Wednesday, April 3 the woman claims she was then told by staff at the hotel she had to check out. She says she called the temporary accommodation team at Oldham Council who told her to wait with her children in the lobby.

The woman claims she was not picked up by the team from the council for seven hours.
