The weirdest free-kick ever? Alania's bizarre set-piece vs Zenit

Alania are through to the semi-finals of the Russian Cup after upsetting Zenit in the quarter-finals.

The second-tier side are currently sixth in their table and were huge underdogs against Zenit, who are currently leading the way in the Russian Premier League.

But the home side took a second half lead through Batraz Gurtsiyev.

However, any hopes of a shock win were soon dashed.

Douglas Santos equalised with 20 minutes remaining before Ivan Sergeyev appeared to send Zenit through to the last four in the 91st-minute.

But there was still time for Alania to produce a bizarrely brilliant free-kick routine that sent the tie into extra-time.

Alania won a set-piece 25 yards out and pulled off something that is being dubbed ‘the weirdest free-kick routine ever.’

Two players stand over the ball, while five other attackers are standing in the box. The entire Zenit team is defending the free-kick as they look to see out their lead in second injury-time.

All of a sudden, the five Alania players run out of the box and stand behind the two free-kick takers.

What are they doing?

Then, the left-footed player – who looked set to take it all along – runs over the ball and allows the right-footed player Nikolai Giorgobiani to curl the ball delightfully into the top corner.
