"The way it's going to go" - Journalist drops interesting AVFC prediction given "how Gerrard is"

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard could tinker with his preferred formation between now and the end of the season, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 41-year-old has not been afraid to adjust his system during his short stay at Villa Park so far, and he may continue to show tactical flexibility in the coming months.

When he first arrived at the club, Gerrard was often deploying a 4-3-2-1 formation. This largely meant that only one out of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings usually started as Gerrard tried to get the most out of his wingers.

However, with Philippe Coutinho arriving in January, and Villa’s wide men hardly nailing down their spots in the team, Gerrard has switched things up recently.

Against Brighton and Southampton, he moved to a narrower 4-3-1-2 system, which allowed him to get Coutinho, Watkins and Ings all into the same team.

In those two matches, it worked wonders as Villa picked up a much-needed 2-0 win against Brighton, before thrashing Southampton 4-0 at home.

Changing the setup of the team may have paid off in the last two games for Gerrard, but O’Rourke thinks he could switch things up again in the future, depending on who his side is facing.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “I think how Gerrard is, he will change formations and how he sets up to the opposition that he’s possibly facing. So, I think that’s the way it’s going to go for Aston Villa right now.”

Gerrard moving to a diamond-shaped midfield has helped enabled Coutinho to pull the strings in the No. 10 role, while Watkins and Ings appear to finally be clicking into gear as a pair.
