The trendy Manchester neighbourhood that is seeing the same problem time and time again

Images of overflowing litter bins in Ancoats have again been plastered over social media — which residents say happens ‘every single week’.

One photo posted on Twitter shows a bin overflowing with coffee cups, plastic bags, soft drinks bottles — and even a settee cushion in the trendy city centre neighbourhood. Nathan Whittaker, who posted the image, says the problem happens ‘every single week’.

Litter has also been frequently reported in local Facebook groups for the area, which is inundated with sunseekers on hot summer days. The problem is exacerbated by the popularity of the area.

New Islington Marina and adjoining Cotton Field Park are particularly attractive with those wanting to socialise in the city. So is New Islington Green, by the tram stop, and Cutting Room Square in Ancoats — home to Rudy’s Pizza and Seven Brothers bar, to name a few.

Now, after enquiries from the Manchester Evening News , the council has confirmed that the offending bins have been emptied. A statement said: "We're aware that some of the litter bins in Ancoats were overflowing with rubbish the following the nice weather yesterday .

“The bins were emptied on Monday evening and we would like to thank the residents that have reported this issue through the official council channels. To report an overflowing bin please visit the Manchester City Council website."

Irene Robinson, a councillor for the Ancoats and Beswick ward, has also said that the Canal and Rivers Trust will be ‘stepping up collections if it [is] because of the high usage’.
