However, those clubs have also sold some players and have been made to look rather foolish for doing so as they’ve gone on to be stars elsewhere! Patrick Vieira had already spent nine very good seasons at Arsenal when he was sold to Juventus in 2005, however, he still hadn’t turned 30-years-old at that time and he had more left in the tank, as shown by his displays at Juventus and Inter Milan.

In 2014, Chelsea sold Kevin De Bruyne for a fee of just £18 million. Fast forward a few years and he’s now regarded as one of the best players on the planet and he’s helping Manchester City win trophy after trophy.

It’s difficult to blame Liverpool too much for this one as Michael Owen pushed for a move to Real Madrid and he was entering the final year of his contract. Still, the Reds took a while to replace the England international and both parties would likely have been better off had he stayed.
