The Premier League transfer rules Nottingham Forest must stick to following promotion

Nottingham Forest are in for a busy summer as they look ahead to their return to the Premier League.

This window presents a big chance for head coach Steve Cooper to put his stamp on the squad, ready for the top-flight. And there will be incomings and outgoings at the City Ground in the coming weeks.

However, promotion means the Reds do have some different transfer rules to follow, compared to being in the Championship. They will affect what business gets done before the window closes on September 1.

The loan market proved to be particularly beneficial for Forest during the campaign just gone. Max Lowe, Philip Zinckernagel, James Garner, Djed Spence and Keinan Davis all impressed and played key roles in the Reds' success.

Loan rules are different in the Premier League, though. The new version has yet to be released, but the 2021/22 Handbook outlines the restrictions on how many players top-flight clubs can loan from other Premier League/English clubs.

The rules state: “Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time; the maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time; Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window; a Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club. With the exception of Welsh clubs competing in the competitions, loans from a club in membership of another National Association do not count towards the above quotas.”
