The most-read sports stories of the year

That was a hectic 12 months of sport.

Two Irish World Cup campaigns, a Ryder Cup, a historic Dublin All-Ireland triumph, a Grand Slam, a hugely controversial club football final, some big strides on the athletics track and more sagas than you could shake a stick at.

Throw in Katie Taylor's tale of redemption, that kiss in Sydney, the shocking loss of Craig Breen, among others, and you have a year of huge stories.

We have compiled the top 10 for each month here, to give you an idea of what you were reading on these pages this year.

Just to note, we have not included live blogs, so as to give a better idea of the top news stories, as opposed to events. So if you're wondering why the All-Ireland hurling or football finals don't feature, rest assured the live blogs of huge matches in GAA, rugby or soccer would be among top overall articles for the year.
