The moment Mapimpi was stopped in his tracks by Aussie freight train
The Springboks can have nobody but themselves to blame following Saturday's 25-17 Rugby Championship loss to Australia in Adelaide.
For the bulk of the contest, they were poor in most departments.
There were defensive errors, set-piece inconsistencies and kicking struggles both off the tee and out of hand. Perhaps most disappointing for the Boks, however, was their inability to convert territorial and possession dominance into points.
Having gone 10-0 down early in the match, the Boks then bounced back to dominate the rest of the first half but could only take three points into the break.
One of the key moments of the contest came in the 37th minute. With Australia 10-3 up, the Boks had sucked in the defence and they released a charging Makazole Mapimpi down the left flank.
South Africa's 2019 World Cup hero looked set to score for all money, but he was met by a huge hit from Marika Koroibete and was smashed into touch.
Replays suggested that Koroibete had not wrapped his arms around Mapimpi, but referee Paul Williams saw no issue and the try-saving tackle stood.
Merits of the hit aside, its impact in the context of the match cannot be denied, and Getty photographer Mark Kolbe was on hand to capture the action shots of the match.
"It showed their desperation, not just from him, but there were a couple on their tryline. A lot of credit has to go to the Wallabies in terms of how they defended," Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber said after the match, takin no issue with Williams' call.
