The 'massive job' Matt Doherty is doing for Tottenham in Antonio Conte's Champions League quest

Ben Davies has stated that Matt Doherty will be doing a "massive job" for Tottenham if he continues to contribute with goals and assists. Signed by Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2020 after wowing in the Premier League for Wolves, the Republic of Ireland international found himself in and out of the team in his debut campaign for Spurs.

Not helped by Tottenham operating with a back four rather than with wing-backs, Doherty couldn't find his stride playing in a different position to the one he caught the eye in at Molineux. Again struggling for minutes in the first few months of this term despite his former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo taking on the hotseat, Doherty has looked more like his old self since Antonio Conte gave him a run in the team in February.

Scoring and assisting in the 4-0 triumph away at Leeds United, the 30-year-old then added another two assists to his name the following week when Spurs hit Everton for five. Netting a header and teeing up Emerson Royal on Sunday against Newcastle despite playing as a left wing-back in Sergio Reguilon's absence, Davies is extremely pleased to see his teammate excel at present and contribute to Spurs' top-four push.

"I think Matt probably hasn't really had too much of a run of games until now. I think that faith he's had shown in him is really playing off," said the Welshman when speaking to Spurs TV after the game.

"He's playing out of his skin and he's contributing offensively and defensively. He has been superb to be honest and if he keeps picking up goals and assists then he's doing a massive job for the team. He has been brilliant."
