Newcastle thumped at Spurs - The Everything is Black and White Podcast

Eddie Howe is busy analysing Newcastle United’s performance after his side were thumped 5-1 by Tottenham. The result condemned United to their third defeat in a row and was arguably one of the worst performances under the head coach since he was appointed back in October.

Newcastle took the lead thanks to a free-kick from Fabian Schar but lost the lead just moments later as Ben Davies pulled the scores level. The teams went into the break level but the second 45 saw a total collapse from Newcastle, with Spurs able to net a further four.

On the latest episode of The Everything is Black and White Podcast, Andrew Musgrove is joined by Newcastle United Editor Aaron Stokes. The pair take a look back at the game, trying to pick apart what went wrong for Howe and his side.

Speaking about the game, Stoke said: “The first 10-15 minutes wasn’t the best for Newcastle - it didn't seem like they had any intention to get the ball! The possession was something like 82% in Spurs’ favour in the first 15 minutes.

“Yet after that, they grew into the game. Up to half-time, it was much improved - looking to get forward. But the contrast to the second half, it was like watching two different teams. It is very, very rare that under Eddie Howe you see a total collapse. We can look back to the Leicester City game in December, which was a similar set-up in the game.

“Against Spurs, it’s a bit of reality check, a wake-up call. They’ve pulled away from the relegation zone and everyone is looking ahead to next season but until they are mathematically safe we need to see them keep their feet on the ground.”
