The Mancunian Way: 'We're worried about being the next Ancoats'

For some, Ancoats is emblematic of the immense change Manchester city centre has undergone over the last two decades.

But others say they feel priced out of their own area in favour of new developments, expensive coffee shops, and a desire to reshape an already established city.

Now it is Collyhurst’s turn. The north Manchester suburb will soon see hundreds of people move into newly-constructed houses and flats as part of the £4 billion Victoria North development.

Residents aren’t being asked to leave - a key Victoria North selling point is ‘everyone will be offered the opportunity to stay’, according to project director Tom Fenton, and the council has promised a ‘single move policy’ to minimise residents’ disruption.

But residents know their neighbourhood is about to change forever. Local democracy reporter Ethan Davies has been down to Kylie’s Kitchen, Collyhurst’s only cafe, to see how they feel about the future.

You can read what they had to say, as well as more about the Victoria North development, here.

If you read yesterday’s Mancunian Way, you’ll know that the fight is on to save the iconic Salford Lads Club. The Greater Manchester institution must find a quarter of a million pounds by the end of November. If it doesn't, it will close.

The Manchester Evening News has launched a campaign to keep this beloved and important place alive. Alongside this, we’re taking a look at just why Salford Lads Club is such a salient part of our city’s heritage, and the lives it has helped transform.

Today we take a look at the illustrious history of the club, from the making of world class footballers to its most famous appearance as the backdrop in a picture of The Smiths. You can read it here.
