The infamous city street where residents allege 'pimp' gangs battle for the prime locations for their sex workers

Sex workers "beaten by pimps", individuals openly dealing drugs, and numerous instances of violence and anti-social behaviour are just some of the scenes David Richards has witnessed near his home.

Residents in the upper High Street area of Swansea, north of Swansea Railway Station, report frequently seeing women on street corners "offering business" as early as 6am.

They also express concern about having to be cautious when walking their dogs to avoid condoms, needles and small plastic bags (potentially containing drugs) scattered across pavements, parks and grassland, reports Wales Online.

Swansea's High Street area has held a notorious reputation for illicit sex work for over a hundred years. A special report by WalesOnline in 2017 unveiled the pitiful circumstance of women selling themselves for as little as £10 with protection and an added £5 without.

Their desperation to earn money drove them to these measures.

Fast forward seven years, local residents affirm that nothing has changed, lamenting the continuous "nightmare" of living in the region. The local police take a different stance, stating they aren't witnessing the same level of community concern as seen previously, such as during the Operation Jaeger initiative.

"It's no exaggeration to say that life is a nightmare for local people who have to live with these activities on their doorsteps, with noise and disturbance - not to mention the threat of violence - an ever-present feature of living round here," said local resident David Richards. "And don't forget this takes place within a couple of hundred yards of a school."
