The image that shows Rangers UEFA Cup final pain still haunts me but my gut tells me it won't be same in Spain – Barry Ferguson

I once lost a league title and a European final in the space of just a few days. And let me tell you something, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Fourteen years on, there’s a photograph which still haunts me to this day. It’s a picture of myself and Lee McCulloch sitting on the pitch at the Etihad, holding our knees to our chests. The pain is etched on my face and, to tell you the truth, I’m not sure it’s ever fully gone away.

Looking back, I had two summers that I would rather forget. That one. And the time I knew my Rangers career was over because of the Scotland Boozegate debacle. They were the most agonising times I ever had to endure as a professional.

But the summer of 2008? I can hardly begin to describe how it felt.

Losing the league was bad enough. In fact, it was horrendous because we ran out of steam and had to watch our closest rivals win it.

But throw in the UEFA Cup Final defeat to Zenit St Petersburg? It was gut wrenching. Horrible. It was the kind of double whammy that leaves you in a daze for weeks afterwards as if you’ve been punched between the eyes and kicked in the crown jewels at the same time.
