In the process, Ronaldo became FIFA’s all-time record goal-scorer in competitive matches, providing a friendly reminder to the sporting world that any whisper of him ‘being done’ was reckless hearsay.

Some 24 hours later, Tom Brady had gone full circle and come out of retirement.

Perhaps it was the hoots and hollers of another GOAT trilling in Brady’s ears at Old Trafford that goaded the seven-time Super Bowl winner to reconsider his retirement.
