‘The fans relate to him’; Terry names next Chelsea captain who grabs game by ‘scruff of the neck’

Former skipper John Terry feels midfielder Mason Mount has all the attributes required to become the next Chelsea captain.

Defender Cesar Azpilicueta currently wears the Blues armband, having been handed the captaincy ahead of the 2019-2020 season. The Spain international is now in his tenth season at Stamford Bridge having joined from Marseille in August 2012. And the west Londoners have certainly got their money’s worth out of the right-back.

Azpilicueta has made 465 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 16 goals. The 32-year-old was due to fall out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

However, it was reported last week that the European champions had exercised a clause in his contract and extended his deal by 12 months. There is still some confusion over his contract status – and he may leave in the summer.

Barcelona had been mentioned in connection with the veteran stopper. However, it has been suggested that the Nou Camp giants’ interest has now cooled.

It remains to be seen what happens but Terry feels there is a ready-made replacement for the captain’s role.

“When you’re captain, it’s important that you’re a consistent performer week in week out,” he told Stadium Astro. “When you play, you give a solid seven or eight out of ten every week. Azpi does that for the group and he’s that example for everyone else to follow.

“I love what he does but I think the progression from that, when he does decide to go, leads itself to Mase (Mason Mount) for me.

“I think Mase has got the ability to go on and grab the game by the scruff of its neck. The Chelsea fans relate to him, he’s Chelsea through and through – his family are as well. And I would love to see it.”
