The fall of Mariupol, far-right ideology goes mainstream, France's new government

The "great replacement" conspiracy theory was at the core of the manifesto of an 18-year-old who livestreamed a mass shooting targeting Blacks at a Buffalo supermarket last weekend. The US president came to that northeastern American city on Tuesday to comfort families and call out domestic terror, White supremacists and those who enable them.

Can Emmanuel Macron renew himself? This week, the re-elected French president renewed his team, changing prime ministers before the naming of a new cabinet. They will be answering to 61-year-old Elisabeth Borne, who was labour minister under her predecessor. France's only other female prime minister - Socialist Edith Cresson - lasted only eleven months in the job before she was forced out in 1992.

Neighbouring Spain is throwing the spotlight on the fight for equality and women's rights. The government is introducing a bill to allow medical leave paid by the state for women who suffer from severe period pains, a first for Europe. "Periods will no longer be taboo," vowed Spanish equality minister Irene Montero, to the delight of many on the streets of Barcelona.
