The Calvin Bassey 'difficulty' facing Rangers as Kris Boyd outlines how Ajax transfer fee could be reinvested
Rangers will need two players to properly replace Calvin Bassey according to former striker Kris Boyd. Versatile defender Bassey has reportedly held talks with Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder and the four-time European Cup winners are preparing a formal offer for the Nigerian international, with Brighton also interested in signing him.
Given Bassey is equally adept at playing in the middle of defence as well as left back, ex-Ibrox frontman Boyd believes Giovanni van Bronckhorst will need to sign two players to fill the gap left in the squad should he depart. But the flipside is that the £20million-plus fee Rangers are looking for could help them keep their stars now in the final year of their contracts. Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Filip Helander and Ryan Jack can all leave the club for nothing next summer as things stand.
And Boyd can see the Light Blues investing any Bassey money into new deals for those three. However, they’ll also need to identify a couple of new faces to ensure Bassey’s exit doesn’t leave them short.
“We know when teams are looking at players nowadays, they want them to be able to cover numerous positions, and Calvin Bassey certainly falls into that category,” he told Sky Sports. “His performances towards the end of the season for Rangers were outstanding, and you feel as if the team got a lot of belief from that as well. They didn’t have to protect the backline as much. His pace in dealing with recoveries and one-on-ones was excellent.
“If he has to go, and it looks as if it’s going to happen, he’ll be a big miss for Rangers. But there’s players who have left in the past who have been replaced. This one could be a little bit difficult. Borna Barisic is there and he’s been linked with moves away as
